"The Blue Mug and Pipe and the Grapefruit and Fixative are both quite modest works in muted colours, employing uncomplicated paint application and ordinary subject matter. 

I see them as a pair, because I produced them at the same time when I was simplifying my subject matter and trying to focus on direct descriptions of physical or visual relationships: The clear plastic lid that allows the mug to hover above a tower of tape, or the orange cross on the can of fixative that relates in surprising ways to the stack of grapefruit. I see these images as close to the spirit of modern abstraction."
