"This image is based on a handful of giant black Spanish radishes dug out of the kitchen garden at Vaucluse House. Vaucluse House was once the home of W.C. Wentworth and is now run as a museum by Sydney Living Museums, and the gardens are a key part of the collection. The kitchen garden features heirloom varieties of vegetables that were available in Sydney in the early 19th Century, including black carrots, 'Turk's Turban' squashes and, of course, giant black Spanish radishes which have a lovely, velvety skin reminiscent of an elephant."
