"There was a time when I was painting a lot of fish and squid. They decay quite quickly in the studio and after a day or two they become quite pungent and attract a lot of flies, so it’s a race to get the sense of the fish down, and capture it’s shape and the surface of the skin before it decays. It forces me to work quickly and intensely, and I like to think that the final image communicates that sense of duration and change."
